While tragic, Jesus' death reminds us of God's boundless love and the depths of His grace. This reflection compels us to engage in cherished traditions like Visita Iglesia. Visita Iglesia, meaning "church visits," involves visiting seven churches during Holy Week. It's a pilgrimage of penitence (penitensya), a time for prayer, reflection, and connecting with the divine. Some participants recite the Stations of the Cross, while others offer prayers like myself. It's a personal journey of seeking forgiveness and cultivating the power to bestow it. Join us as we explore the profound meaning of Visita Iglesia, delve into the traditions of Fasting and Abstinence, and reflect on the ultimate sacrifice that brought us salvation. Every year, Holy Week transcends the festive spirit of Christmas for me. While the Lord's death carries a somber tone, it's a season that underscores the profound sacrifice that brought salvation from sin. Yes, the crucifixion was tragic, yet it serves as a powerful reminder of God's boundless love and unfathomable grace towards humanity. Every time I contemplate this mystery, the words of Psalm 8:4 echo in my mind: "What is man that you care for him? Mortal man that you keep him in mind?"
This reflection compels me to actively participate in a cherished Filipino tradition during Holy Week – the Visita Iglesia. This practice involves visiting seven churches, each offering a space for spiritual renewal. Some partake in the Stations of the Cross, some recite designated prayers, while I personally offer a heartfelt prayer of thanksgiving and forgiveness. It's a two-way street – seeking forgiveness while also cultivating the grace to forgive others.
Holy Week beautifully exemplifies the human yearning for connection with the divine. It's a testament to our desire to keep the memory of Jesus' Passion, Death, and Resurrection alive – a sacred and holy time.
